Globally known for its serene natural beauty and cultural diversity, the Western Cape is on track to becoming more than just a tourist destination. The region, renowned for its robust entrepreneurial activity, is fast establishing itself as Africa’s ‘Silicon Valley’, a region in California which is home to some of the world’s largest technology companies, as well as many entrepreneurial ventures.

This is according to Stuart Forrest, owner of Triggerfish Animation and 2012 winner of the Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® competition, who says that the easy accessibility of technology and lower costs for business startups encourages more individuals within the space to undertake entrepreneurial ventures.

South Africa’s top entrepreneur of 2012 revealed

In a field of 22 finalists, William Duk, owner of The Plantation Shutter Co., has been honoured with the title of the overall 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year® award in the annual Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® competition.

William managed to successfully transformed The Plantation Shutter Co. – a previously bankrupt business – into a leading market player with a national footprint and healthy profits, in just over the space of five years.

According to Kobus Engelbrecht, a member of the judging panel of the 2012 Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® awards, William illustrates the traits of a tremendously talented entrepreneur and is a worthy winner and representative of the competition… more

The topic of conversation at this years launch was “How will the 2012 budget affect your business going forward?” This question and other issues affecting entrepreneurial growth were discussed at the Kelvin Grove Club on 9 March 2012 during the official Cape Town launch breakfast of the Sanlam / Business Partners 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year® Awards.

The seminar featured an address by Professor Matthew Lester, tackling the 2012 budget and its impact on South African entrepreneurs. Lester, whose credentials include a BCom CTA (Rhodes) and H Dip Tax Law (Wits), is a tax professor at Rhodes University and the winner of the Vice-Chancellor’s award for distinguished teaching in 2001. He also won the SAICA Southern region Honours Tie 2009. Apart from teaching at Rhodes, he also lectures to a wide range of South Africans on money matters and writes the popular weekly column ‘Tax Talk’ in the Sunday Times… more
