Meet the Entrepreneur Driving Educational Change in South Africa

Founder of and Director General at the Institute for Applied Sciences and Commerce (IFASCO) Academy, Nyangani Tshabalala has been named as the Impact Business Entrepreneur of the Year at the 36th annual Business Partners Limited Entrepreneur of the Year® awards. The newly introduced category celebrates entrepreneurs whose businesses make a significant social impact on the communities in which they operate, beyond the objective of financial gain.

The Academy initially began as a second chance matric support programme, but wanting to serve more young people, he expanded its offerings to include accredited trade and occupational training as well as personal development sessions. “We are continuously seeking ways to expand IFASCO’s services across South Africa.”

To this end, Tshabalala developed a mobile application for students needing to rewrite their matric exams but who are unable to attend the Academy’s physical campus. The app provides access to a range of resources, including weekly study notes, instructional videos, live online lessons, and weekly tests. It also features a chatroom where students can connect with peers and tutors to discuss and resolve academic challenges. “This has set IFASCO apart in the industry.”

Orphans and vulnerable learners receive all of the Academy’s services free of charge.

Since its establishment in 2019, the Academy has achieved an 80% pass rate among students retaking their matric exams. Additionally, 97% of those who have participated in the organisation’s training programmes have earned occupational qualifications.

Nyangani’s journey to success has not been an easy one. After his little brother—who was also one of the organisation’s tutors—was tragically murdered by intruders at their facility, he faced the dual hardship of grieving this loss while also needing to relocate the operation. While the transition did lead to a decrease in student numbers, the business still managed to retain its revenue and accreditations.

“Nyangani’s work demonstrates the profound impact that one dedicated entrepreneur can have on countless lives. His aspirations extend beyond profit, to empowering young South Africans with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities they need to succeed,” says David Morobe, Executive General Manager for Impact Investing at Business Partners Limited.
