James Barrington-Brown has earned the title of Innovator of the Year® at the 36th annual Business Partners Limited Entrepreneur of the Year® awards. This is given to entrepreneurs who are reinventing the way business is done in their industries and disrupting the market with innovative products and services.
In 2013, he founded NewSpace Systems (NSS), a cost-effective space manufacturing and design firm focused on supplying critical elements to global space programmes. Although the business encountered challenges in its early stages, Barrington-Brown’s vision and determination drove the company to become a rapidly growing, internationally recognised supplier capable of competing successfully in the global space industry. Recognised as a leader in the field of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) products, NSS serves the majority of commercial spacecraft manufacturers including collaborations with blue-chip firms and satellite constellation builders. Additionally, the company exports to over 33 countries across six continents and is actively working to broaden its market footprint.
Back on earth, the business supports a range of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, such as STEM outreach programmes for students, the Young Bafana Soccer Academy, and internships for aspiring engineers.
“Entrepreneurship thrives on innovation, and James’ accomplishments with NewSpace Systems are a testament to this. His selection for Innovator of the Year® recognises his ability to think boldly, defy the status quo, and deliver revolutionary solutions that have transformed the space industry and set a new benchmark for innovation in the sector. This award celebrates not only his achievements but the global impact of his work,” says David Morobe, Executive General Manager for Impact Investing at Business Partners Limited.
