Sustainability Meets Success: Furnituremaker Named SA’s Emerging Business Entrepreneur of the Year®

Trudy Maleka has been recognised as South Africa’s Emerging Business Entrepreneur of the Year® at the 36th annual Business Partners Limited Entrepreneur of the Year® awards. This accolade celebrates those who have been in business for one to five years, acknowledging their potential and achievements in the early stages of their journey.

Ambesha Africa, her proudly South African company, specialises in manufacturing and repairing custom-made patio furniture. Since its founding in 2016, the business has grown its workforce sevenfold and expanded from a modest 6m container to a 500m² workshop, with further growth plans on the horizon. The organisation has also broadened its product offerings to meet growing demand.

Maleka’s focus on sustainability has not only given her business a unique edge but also saved over 5,000 furniture items from ending up in landfills. By repurposing these pieces, she has generated more than R2 million in sales. Additionally, her company gives back to local communities by donating school uniforms to non-profit organisations.

David Morobe, Executive General Manager for Impact Investing at Business Partners Limited, says, “Trudy’s entrepreneurial drive and adaptability have enabled her to build a flourishing business that not only caters to market demands but also delivers revenue growth and much-needed employment. Already an inspiration to aspiring women entrepreneurs, we are confident that with this award and its benefits, including a share of the R2 million prize pool, mentorship, technical support, networking, and greater exposure, she and her business will continue to flourish and positively impact both the environment and communities she supports.”
