Can entrepreneurship help solve the unemployment crisis in SA?

What do the experts say about unlocking entrepreneurial talent as a solution to address our unemployment crisis? Are we celebrating entrepreneurship and acknowledging entrepreneurs as the heroes of our economy?

These questions and other issues affecting entrepreneurial growth in South Africa will be discussed at the launch of the 2013 Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® competition.

Keynote speaker: Fred Robertson, a leading figure in the South African business community who co-founded Brimstone Investment Corporation Limited, and is currently Executive Deputy Chairman, Brimstone and Chairman of Lion of Africa Insurance Company Limited, Lion of Africa Life Assurance Company Limited, Sea Harvest Holdings (Proprietary) Limited and House of Monatic (Proprietary) Limited.

The topic for our Pretoria workshop was the latest economic trends that will affect your SME going forward.

The 2012 Sanlam / Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® competition breakfast workshop featured an address by Ulrich Joubert, an economist from Kruger International, who is also involved with the Bureau for Economic Research at the University of Stellenbosch. Joubert is a past chairman of the Johannesburg Afrikaanse Sakekamer, as well as the Economic Advisory Committee of the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut. He is also the only economist who has won the Beeld economist of the year competition three times.

The Pretoria workshop took place at the Leriba Hotel on 25 April 2012.

The topic of conversation at this years launch was “How will the 2012 budget affect your business going forward?” This question and other issues affecting entrepreneurial growth were discussed at the Kelvin Grove Club on 9 March 2012 during the official Cape Town launch breakfast of the Sanlam / Business Partners 2012 Entrepreneur of the Year® Awards.

The seminar featured an address by Professor Matthew Lester, tackling the 2012 budget and its impact on South African entrepreneurs. Lester, whose credentials include a BCom CTA (Rhodes) and H Dip Tax Law (Wits), is a tax professor at Rhodes University and the winner of the Vice-Chancellor’s award for distinguished teaching in 2001. He also won the SAICA Southern region Honours Tie 2009. Apart from teaching at Rhodes, he also lectures to a wide range of South Africans on money matters and writes the popular weekly column ‘Tax Talk’ in the Sunday Times.

The Entrepreneur of the Year® Awards is about celebrating entrepreneurs and creates a platform to give acknowledgement and recognition to the unsung heroes of our economy, the successful entrepreneurs, for their vision, innovation, perseverance, drive and commitment to their enterprises. This year saw the competition growing in leaps and bounds towards becoming the premier competition for entrepreneurs in South Africa.
