Business Blog: Personality power

Over the years I have literally met a few thousand entrepreneurs.

Every single one of these business owners had something to share but there are a few that stand out above the rest.

They stand out not because I remember their names or because they made a lot of money. Rather, they stand out because I have spoken about them.

When you say something good about someone, it creates an impression in the listener's mind. Some people might try to argue that they will make up their own minds independently, but the truth is that my words will have an effect.

My biggest clients have not been secured through flashy presentations or glittering business cards - they have been from referrals.

Personal branding can be approached in a number of different ways but we practise this discipline every day. The way in which you interact with customers and suppliers matter because business is always about relationships.

You create relationships with people you like and trust. Trust in turn stems from honesty. How many times have you shown a salesman the door because you did not trust him?

Similarly, how many times have you met a business owner and immediately known that you will be dealing with them going forward?

A simple, yet powerful example is my mechanic. He runs a small business yet there is a waiting list for his services. Why? Because I have referred him to everyone in my social circle; because my brother referred him to all his friends; because he has been honest and open every time we have interacted.

At times, I have had a bitter taste in my mouth when leaving his premises but this has always been directed at the cost of the spares and never because of Gary's labour charges.

In the small business world, deals are made on product, price and relationships. You are your business' ambassador and personal branding is simply another word for reputation.
